Synopsis:
Review by Doug Wright
Any woman that drags their man along to view “Sex and the City” has to know upfront, this comes with a price…..you’re going to owe him at least four blazing action movies or, at the very least, a John Wayne weekend DVD marathon. Wow, where to start. I’m going to assume that those interested in this review are somewhat familiar with the edgy plotline of the HBO hit series. The film opens reminding us of the current status of the four friends. Kim Catttrall is back as Samantha, she’s in California with her TV star boy-toy trying to suppress her insatiable sexual appetite because her man helped her through chemotherapy. Miranda-played again by Cynthia Nixon-is living in Brooklyn with her son and husband Steve…ah, but challenges are brewing for our overachieving lawyer. Then there’s Kristin Davis as sweet Charlotte, she and Harry have adopted and all seems to be going well…..but a little surprise may be in their future. And, finally there’s the star of the show, Sarah Jessica Parker as author, Carrie Bradshaw… still in love with Big who, in order to underscore his love, buys a beautiful new apartment for them….but before Carrie gives up her apartment, she wants a bigger commitment. Without giving away too much, planning for the upcoming nuptials becomes the focus of the entire movie. This is where the guys in the audience will start to glaze over and could easily pass out into their giant tub of popcorn. The women however, are euphoric over the unveiling of a new closet, the unceasing parade of new shoes, the never-ending trying on of dresses, they’re enthralled by breathless discussions of handbag labels and wedding preparation not to mention the obligatory trip to the fashion runway where the most ridiculous fashions are enthusiastically applauded. I’m breaking out in a sweat just reliving the memories of the more than two hours of this stuff. Now, in fairness, there are some touching moments and some tough issues emerge that gives opportunity for some good performances….but, “Sex in the City” is also draped in sexuality, nudity and peppered with language.
