Synopsis:
CHICAGO 10 **1/2 (R) language and brief sexual images. Featuring the voices of Hank Azaria, Nick Nolte, Liev Schreiber, Mark Ruffalo and Jeffrey Wright - along with archival footage of Abbie Hoffman, Jerry Rubin and Bobby Seale. Written and directed by Brett Morgen (“The Kid Stays in the Picture” “On the Ropes”). Playing at the Tower Theatre in SLC. 110 minutes. Director Brett Morgen is seemingly trying to wake up a new generation of anti Iraq war protesters, by showing them the efforts of anti Vietnam War demonstrators forty years ago. He focuses on the Democratic National Convention that took place in Chicago in 1968. An event remembered more for what happened outside than inside as police and protesters clashed violently in the streets. A year later, the infamous Chicago Seven (and their yippie lawyers) stood on trial for allegedly inciting a riot. The court transcripts are brought to life with rotoscope animation and actor voices recreating this bizarre attempt at justice. Where possible, Morgen throws in archival footage of Abbie Hoffman, Jerry Rubin, Bobby Seale, David Dellinger and William Kunstler, but the courtroom animation scenes are the essence of this semi-documentary. And frankly, doing those scenes in this manner looked more than cartoonish and took the edge off their importance. It felt too gimmicky. Plus, Morgen never steps up to the plate. He just relates events as they transpire, satisfied to let them speak for themselves. How about talking to these guys now? What are their thoughts on what they did back then and can they explain why we aren’t as involved today? That would have been a nice tie-in, but we’re left hanging and so I stopped caring. However, for those otherwise inspired, “Chicago10” is playing at the Tower Theatre in SLC. movies at a glance: CHICAGO 10 **1/2 (R) language and brief sexual images. The Democratic National Convention held in Chicago in 1968 turned into a huge battle between antiwar protesters and police. Those that stirred up the crowds were later put on trial for their actions. This is an attempt to recreate those courtroom moments, but it doesn’t carry the kind of weight I was hoping for. Still, it’s a Tower Theatre SLC exclusive.
