Synopsis:
Review by Doug Wright “Emma Smith: My Story” is a fascinating look at the embryonic years of the Mormon Church from the perspective an aging Emma, played by Patricia Place who is sharing her thoughts, impressions and memories with her daughter, Julia. Not afraid to express doubts and ask tough questions of her mother, Julia opens opportunities for Emma to tell of her childhood; how she met Joseph Smith and the trials and tribulations they endured, as well as her personal struggles. Katherine Nelson stars as the younger Emma and Nathan Mitchell stars as Joseph, the same actors seen in “Joseph Smith: Prophet of the Restoration.” Filmmakers had the unique opportunity to use footage shot for, but not used in “Prophet of the Restoration,” enabling them to stretch the budget and deliver a first class look. Cinematographer, T.C. Christiansen’s signature is all over this movie delivering a rich, authentic feel and the performances are outstanding. Both Patricia Place and Katherine Nelson are wonderful in their roles as older and younger Emma. Nathan Mitchell is quite remarkable as Joseph and the supporting cast is terrific. Emma Smith: My Story is touching, insightful and provides a perspective that is long overdue. I thoroughly enjoyed this film, “Emma Smith: My Story” is rated PG and I’m giving it 3 stars…..
