Synopsis:
BONNEVILLE **1/2 (PG) some mild language and innuendo. Starring Jessica Lange, Kathy Bates, Joan Allen, Tom Skerritt and Christine Baranski. Directed by Christopher N. Rowley (“The Remembering Movies”) - filmed in Salt Lake City, the Bonneville Salt Flats, Bryce Canyon, Lake Powell and Las Vegas. Playing at the Century 16 in SLC and the Cinemark 24 at Jordan Landing in West Jordan. 93 minutes. The title certainly got my attention and then I realized it has a double meaning. Three ladies from Pocatello are heading to California in an old Bonneville convertible and they happen to pass right through the Bonneville Salt Flats on the way. The story follows Arvilla (Jessica Lange) who faces a dilemma with her deceased husband’s ashes. She wants to spread them around favorite places they’ve visited over the years, but his first family’s kids want them brought to Santa Barbara to be placed in a vault with his first wife. To sweeten the deal, the kids say they’ll give Arvilla their dad’s Pocatello home if she complies. She, of course, thought her husband had changed his will to include her, but he never got around to it. So if she relents, she can stay in her home. If she doesn’t, they’ve threatened to sell it out from under her. Arvilla’s two best friends, the free-spirited Margene (Kathy Bates) and the straight-laced Mormon Carol (Joan Allen) agree to travel with her to deliver the ashes, but not without making a few stops along the way and so the adventure begins. The biggest laugh I had was when the ladies have a flat tire out in the middle of the actual Salt Flats and some kid just happens to be walking along and gives them a hand. That seemed pretty unlikely considering how far off the highway they were. But they visit some great Utah landmarks, which makes it kinda fun, but Tom Skerritt dropping in as the tag-along truck driver seemed a bit unlikely, as well as a few of the more outlandish scenarios. Still, it was nice to see these three great actresses working together and so close to home that I cut it some slack and decided to sit back and enjoy the ride. movies at a glance: BONNEVILLE **1/2 (PG) some mild language and innuendo. Three great actresses, Jessica Lange, Kathy Bates and Joan Allen, go on a road trip through Utah to deliver a husband’s ashes to Southern California. The script isn’t the best, but the scenery is downright unbeatable and the story has its quiet charm.
