Synopsis:
U2 3D ***1/2 By Steve Salles Standard Examiner movie critic In the arthouses this week - all Sundance! - but there is a little gem playing on the Jordan Commons IMAX that you might want to check out. U2 3D ***1/2 (G) Featuring Bono, The Edge, Adam Clayton and Larry Mullen Jr. Directed by Catherine Owens and Mark Pellington (“The Mothman Prophecies” “Arlington Road”) - filmed in Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Mexico and Australia. Playing exclusively at the Megaplex 17 at Jordan Commons in the Cricket IMAX Theatre. 85 minutes. I actually paid good, hard money to see U2 years ago at the University of Utah. It was a great show and my family had a wonderful time. However, you haven’t truly experienced a U2 concert until you see this latest effort on the massive IMAX screen and in 3D. It feels like you’re hovering around the band up close and personal. It’s an amazing piece of filmmaking. The footage was shot over two years in various locations in Central and South America. Lead singer Bono says he specifically loves the energy in these Latin arenas because the fans are so responsive. The only misstep is in the first song of the encore when annoying words start buzzing around your head like gnats on a summer’s eve. Remember those days? Other than that, this was an exhilarating toe-tappin’ experience that makes you feel like you are right there. Some of the best use of three dimensional filmmaking I have ever seen. And if you’re big fans of U2? This is a “must not miss” event that will give you a whole new appreciation for just how cool Bono and his bandmates are. It’s only playing in the Cricket IMAX Theatre at the Megaplex 17 at Jordan Commons in Sandy. movies at a glance: U2 3D ***1/2 (G) I’ve witnessed the power of a U2 concert first hand, but I have never seen anything like this as this world famous Irish rock band literally comes out of the screen and makes you feel like you have the best seat in the house. It’s some of the finest use of the 3D format I’ve ever seen and doesn’t give you that whoosy feeling like other 3D movies might. Fans of U2 must make the effort to see this film playing at the Cricket IMAX Theatre at the Megaplex 17 in Jordan Commons - Sandy.
