Synopsis:
THERE WILL BE BLOOD *** (R) some violence. Starring Daniel Day-Lewis, Paul Dano, Ciaran Hinds, Dillon Freasier and Kevin J. O’Connor. Written and directed by Paul Thomas Anderson (“Magnolia” “Boogie Nights”) - filmed in New Mexico, Texas and California. Playing at the Broadway Centre in SLC. 158 minutes.
In my mind, Daniel Day-Lewis is the most intense actor working today, and so if you’re going to put him in your movie, you’d better give him something powerful to do and say.
I think writer/director P. T. Anderson does that very well. He gives Day-Lewis all the scenery he can chew and all the bluster he can muster, but does that make it a masterpiece movie? I don’t think so.
Only one other character dares to duel with Day-Lewis’ Daniel Plainview. It’s the smug preacher boy Eli (Paul Dano) who hides behind the townsfolk and his religion to keep Plainview at bay.
Daniel Plainview is a determined oil man from beginning to end. He first discovers it in Texas in the early 1900’s and begins a relentless pursuit to vanquish all competition from there to California.
He has no family, although fortune smiles upon him as a fellow driller gets killed leaving a baby boy to be tended. Plainview takes on the child as his own, but the boy doesn’t display the same kill-or-be-killed instinct and once something happens to this heir apparent, Daniel looks on his as “damaged goods.”
Plainview admits throughout that he doesn’t like people. He just tolerates them until he gets what he needs. Is it this intense greed that drives him into madness? And can the same thing be said about Preacher Eli?
Great performances? No doubt. Great movie however, is a little less clear as Anderson employs an overwhelming soundtrack (an oft used Stanley Kubrick device) and forces you to sit there for nearly three hours watching this relentless man calculate his every move.
So, a great character study - yes - but not my favorite movie.
“There Will Be Blood” is playing at the Broadway Centre in SLC.
Movies at a glance: THERE WILL BE BLOOD *** (R) some violence. Normally, I’m a big fan of P.T. Anderson’s films and I appreciate Daniel Day-Lewis as one of the most intense actors working today, but I thought this epic was too long (nearly three hours) and too morose to be fully appreciated. It’s a great character study, but not among my favorites. A Broadway Centre SLC exclusive.
