Synopsis:
ATONEMENT *** (R) disturbing war images, language and some sexuality. Starring James McAvoy, Keira Knightley, Saoirse Ronan, Brenda Blethyn and Benedict Cumberbatch. Directed by Joe Wright (“Pride & Prejudice”) - filmed in England. Playing at the Broadway Centre in SLC. 130 minutes.
Forgive me if I don’t go gaga over this latest period piece romance, but I found the premise to be so preposterous that I couldn’t fully wrap my arms around it.
Having said that, I did love the young couple within the nightmare and would have liked to have seen their story without all the quibbling histrionics that came with it.
It’s the age old story of the sassy rich debutante and the servant’s dashing son who but for class distinction would have surely been a match made in heaven.
But a younger, jealous sister believes she sees the handsome garden lad having his way with one of the weekend guests in the wild flowers and falsely names him as the violator.
Longing to be together, but separated by prison and World War I, Robbie (James McAvoy) and Cecilia (Keira Knightly) do their best to keep a stiff upper lip and do their duty to god and country, until perhaps someday, they can rekindle their weighty soulmatey-ness.
The bratty sister has also grown up and now realizes that she might have made a mistake (ya think?) at pointing the finger at sweet Robbie, but how to make amends?
This romantic tale of love and war will have many swooning, but I was so put off by the fate of these people resting on such a flimsy accusation that I was never able to recover. It certainly is a good looking film with two strong performances within and looks like the kind of movie award groups love to embrace. It’s playing at the Broadway Centre in SLC.
