Delta to Limit Carry-on Baggage (March 23, 1998)

We've all done it. You don't want to check your luggage, so you just carry it all on board the plane with you.

Well, this stow-it-yourself trend is causing flight delays and sometimes even injuries. News Specialist Shannon Ogden reports on a new Delta Airlines policy aimed a changing the way you travel and pack:

Beginning April 15th, if your baggage doesn't fit here (within Delta's "Size-Wise" measuring units to be located throughout Delta airports), you're not carrying it on board...at least on Delta flights.

The new policy allows only two carry-on items per person, each must fit the size requirement. And, laptop computers will be counted towards the two-piece limit. That's right. Purses, on the other hand, will not.

Delta says this stricter policy will get more flights in the air on time.

((MIKE MCMAHON/DELTA FIRST OFFICER: "IF EVERYBODY BRINGS TWO BIG ONES AND A COUPLE OF CHEATERS, YOU DEFINITELY RUN OUT OF ROOM. YOU START GATE-CHECKING BAGGAGE. IT LENGTHENS THE PROCESS TO GET THE PLANE OUT OF THE GATE ON TIME."))

Flight attendants are on-board. They say overstuffed overhead bins often come unlatched. Carry-ons have become dangerous, they say, and sometimes ridiculous.

((WENDIE HIGHSMITH/DELTA, FLIGHT SERVICE MANAGER: "SEWING MACHINES, AIR CONDITIONERS. DURING CHRISTMASTIME, SOMEONE TRIED TO BRING A BICYCLE THROUGH SECURITY BECAUSE THEY WANTED TO BRING IT ON THE AIRPLANE."))

((PASSENGER: "I THINK THE FLIGHT ATTENDANTS ARE WHINING A LITTLE BIT. I THINK THERE'S PLENTY OF ROOM USUALLY."))

((PASSENGER: "I'M NOT REALLY HAPPY ABOUT IT. REPORTER: WHY NOT? PASSENGER: BECAUSE I HAVE MY LAPTOP AND THIS AND USUALLY ANOTHER BAG. IT'S SO RESTRICTIVE."))

((REPORTER: "IT LOOKS LIKE YOU'RE ONE OF THE PEOPLE THEY'RE TARGETING? PASSENGER: THAT'S EXACTLY. REPORTER: BUT YOU'RE OK WITH IT? PASSENGER: ABSOLUTELY."))

((SHANNON OGDEN: "THE PROBLEM IS, RULES DIFFER AMONG AIRLINES. DELTA'S CARRY-ON POLICY MAY BE DIFFERENT THAN, SAY, UNITED'S. SO DELTA AND A GROUP OF OTHER AIRLINES IS PUSHING THE FAA FOR AN INDUSTRY-WIDE STANDARD."))

Many people say they don't check their bags because they're afraid the bags will get lost. Delta says lost luggage, for the most part, is a thing of the past. Southwest and a few other airlines have adopted similar policies.
