Detecting Ulcers (March 23, 1998)

Are you suffering from an upset stomach and heart burn? There's a simple way to find out if the root of your problem is an ulcer.

Researchers found that a bacteria called helico-bactor pylori or H. pylori causes from 60 to 90 percent of stomach ulcers. The good news: not only can they be cured, but the test to diagnose is an easy one.

People that should be tested for H. pylori are those that have had documented peptic ulcer disease. Another sign to look for: indigestion in the upper abdomen that tends to be relieved by meals, but comes back after 2 to 3 hours.

Medical studies show that H. pylori infection in the US vaires with age, ethnic group and economic class.

The bateria is more common among older adults, African Americans and those from lower income groups.
