Tuesday's Primary Elections (June 24, 1998)

Utahns went to the polls in record low numbers Tuesday, delivering the lowest voter turnout in a decade at just under thirteen percent.

In the third congressional district, Representative Chris Cannon buried political novice and arch-conservative Jeremy Friedbaum.

In Salt Lake County, Commissioner Mary Callaghan barely survived a challenge from former supporter, Wendy Smith. With all precincts reporting, Callaghan led by just 40 votes, which could send the race to a recount.

Salt Lake County voters ousted District Attorney, Neal Gunnarson. State securities regulator, Mark Griffin defeated Gunnarson 59% to 41%. Griffin had attacked Gunnarson for failing to prosecute Salt Lake City Mayor DeeDee Corradini for accepting personal cash gifts from people who did business with the city.

The Murray smokestacks are coming down. Voters overwhelmingly defeated a measure to increase property taxes in order to finance renovation of the structures. 21 percent of Murray City residents turned out to vote on the issue.

Voters in the Alpine School District passed a $66.9 million bond to build more schools. Alpine is one of the fastest-growing districts in the state.
