Hantavirus (July 13, 1998)

Another case of the deadly hantavirus has been reported in Utah--the first in almost two years. But scientists say this case is very unusual because the victim recovered so easily.

CRAIG NICHOLS, STATE EPIDEMIOLOGIST: "THE MAN WAS VERY FORTUNATE - BRIEF HOSPITALIZATION - NO PNEUMONIA - AND HE'S DOING WELL. HE'S RECOVERED VERY UNEVENTFULLY."

The victim apparently contracted the disease in Juab County, the same general area of another mild case reported four years ago. That has health officials wondering why the potentially fatal disease, usually spred by mice, can sometimes be mild here.

There's even some speculation that there might be a variant strain of hantavirus in Juab County. Officials at The Centers for Disease Control say that would be unlikely, but they're running some additional tests to find out.
