Who hasn't complained about the traffic and construction on our roads? Pracatically everyone says it's a problem. But who's willing to do someting about it? The results of a recent poll came as a surprise to transportation officials.
Driver: "IT'S TERRIBLE I HATE IT."
Driver: "IT'S REAL BAD."
Driver: "AT LEAST ONCE A DAY YOU'RE STUCK IN SOME ROAD TRAFFIC."
Their feelings mirror the transportation department's new poll. A huge majority, more than 90% agree construction on I-15 and other projects has created an impact. And the polls shows we're not very tolerant of delays.
Two-thirds of drivers say anything that holds us up more than 15 minutes is unacceptable.
But here's where it gets interesting. Are we willing to take the bus or carpool to reduce traffic?
Driver: "NO NOT AT ALL."
Driver: "I WOULDN'T RIDE THE BUS."
Driver: "I HAVE RODE THE BUS, AND THAT DOES MAKE IT BETTER. IT'S SLOWER, BUT IF MORE PEOPLE WOULD DO THAT..."
Driver: "I DON'T EVEN KNOW IF THERE'S A POINT TO WHICH THE TRAFFIC COULD BECOME WORSE WHERE I WOULD EVEN CONSIDER DOING THAT."
Only 9% of drivers are riding the bus more often.
15% more are carpooling.
And only around 6% of businesses say they are even considering offering incentives to workers to take the bus or carpool.
Mark Fredrickson/I-15 Team: "THE HIGH NUMBERS OF BUSINESSES THAT SAID THEY WERE NOT OFFERING ALTERNATIVE PROGRAMS WAS SOMEWHAT SURPRISING TO US."
Transportation leaders say alternative driving habits would make a difference, and despite the low numbers, they're not giving up.
"WE'RE GOING TO CONTINUE OFFERING THE INFORMATION AND ENCOURAGING BUSINESSES AND COMMUTERS AND MOTORISTS."
The poll showed the way most of us are making changes for traffic is simply by driving different routes.
In a related subject -- We pay a lot of money in federal fuel taxes; but we don't get the same amount in return for road maintenence. But a new law should make things better.
During the past few years, for every dollar that Utahns paid in gas taxes, we received only $.84 back! But, the new law will help--it will raise the rate of return to about $.92 for each dollar. Plus the law also calls for special consideration to states which hold the Olympics!
