A dramatic accident occurred on the Mormon Trail Wagon Train today just as the wagons left their campsite early this morning near East Canyon Reservoir. Fortunately, neither the wagon's six occupants nor the mules suffered serious injuries. Religion Specialist Duane Cardall was with the wagon train this morning and joins us now live from Little Mountain. Duane, what happened?
The wagon lost its brakes, hit a bump and that threw off the teamster. So, what you had was a runaway team of mules with no one to rein them in.
The wagon is sponsored by Cassia County, Idaho. Val Robbins is the teamster.
((VAL ROBBINS, TEAMSTER: "WE HIT SOME ROCKS AND I HAD MY BRAKES SET UP AS FAR AS THEY'D GO AND THEY HIT THEM ROCKS AND THEY STARTED BOUNCE."))
It literally bounced Robbins right out of the wagon. That left the frightened mules free to run.
((CATHERINE GOODFELLOW, PASSENGER: "I WAS SITTING LOOKING BACK, SO I DON'T KNOW WHAT HAPPENED."))
Five passengers in the wagon. When the team hit that big bump, they stayed in the wagon box.
((CODY FUNK, PASSENGER: "I JUST KNEW, I JUST KNEW IT WAS GONNA HAPPEN." REPORTER: "WHAT DID IT FEEL LIKE COMING OFF OF THERE?")) FUNK: "HARD." REPORTER: "WAS IT KINDA SCARY?" FUNK: "YA"))
((CASE FUNK, PASSENGER: "I JUST REMEMBER HITTING THE DITCH AND GOING DOWN AND THEN I JUST REMEMBER EVERYONE SCREAMING AND STUFF."))
((WOMAN: "THE LINE SNAPPED TOO. WOMAN 2: "YA."))
Wagon parts all up and down the hill. Just like the passengers, just a few scrapes and bruises on the mules. weldon Beck 26:35Weldon Beck normally rides in this wagon. But, today the 86-year-old former Cassia County Commissioner moved to another wagon, just before the accident. As for Val Robbins, what a helpless feeling, once he was thrown from the wagon.

Tomorrow's the big day when the wagon train enters the Salt Lake Valley. But if you plan to try and stake out a spot to watch the event, be aware of some major restrictions. News Specialist Ed Yeates joins us LIVE from This is the Place State Park. Ed, is this where the wagons will come to rest?
At first glance, this would be the perfect vantage point. Because here you could see the wagon train come out of the mouth of the canyon and wind its way up a dirt road just below me. But this spot tomorrow will be off limits to the public.
Here's an aerial view of Pioneer Trails State Park. This is the Place Monument is where I'm standing now.
All of the area marked in red here which includes everything through the monument and south and northeast is off limits to the public. Only invited guests will be allowed within the monument area itself.
When the wagon train comes out of the mouth of the canyon, it will not follow the highway. It will take this upper road into the Park and follow a dirt road west of the Monument, winding its way up and around the Monument circle.
All other places in the Park, including Pioneer Village are open to the public. But foot traffic only, no public vehicles allowed. You can walk or stand close to the wagon train but only within twenty feet. Other reminders..
Emmigration Canyon will be closed to motor traffic beginning at 6 am tomorrow morning. If you come early to walk in the park or alongside the highway, bring water. It will be hot. Wear a hat or a bonnet for protection against the sun. No fires allowed. No overnight camping. We'll have more information tonight at five and six.
And the best spot to see the wagon train may be in your own home. You can watch it "LIVE" on KSL beginning at eleven o'clock in the morning.
