Pioneers & SLC Watershed (July 20, 1997)

Monday's leg of the Mormon Trail Wagon train should be the most difficult of the thousand-mile journey. And - it's complicated by the fact that wagons and livestock will be going through protected Salt Lake City watershed. Religion Specialist Duane Cardall has details.

Water shed protection probably didn't enter the minds of the original pioneers 150 years ago. And many scientists say Utah's early settlers did make some environmental mistakes.

University of Utah biologists say the Salt Lake Valley looks much different now than it did when the pioneers got their first glimpse of it. Weeds and shrubs have replaced the lush green grass found in 1847. That's because the early settlers put too many sheep and cattle on the range. And it took several generations to realize what they were doing wrong.

The wake up call came when soil erosion caused severe flooding around the turn of the century. That led to increased protection by both the local and federal governments.
