Day 52: Wednesday, May 26, 1847 (May 26, 1997)

The pioneers of 1847 passed directly north of Chimney Rock, this May 26th. Orson Pratt Orson Pratt calulated its height at 260-feet, but because of erosion, it's 30 to 50 feet shorter than it was then.

P A few tense moments for the pioneers this day. Something spooked a pony acquired from the Indians the day before and it galloped amongst the wagons frightening the other animals.

Wilford Woodruff:

"IN AN INSTANT A DOZEN OR MORE WAGONS WERE DARTING BY EACH OTHER LIKE LIGHTENING AND THE HORSES AND MULES FLYING AS IT WERE OVER THE GROUND."

After several near collisions between wagons, the animals settled down and the company continued until camping near today's town of Minatare, Nebraska.
