Day 51: Tuesday, May 25, 1847 (May 25, 1997)

It is without doubt, the most famous landmark on the pioneer trail west. Indians called it the Teepee, but since 1827, westward travelers have called it Chimney Rock. To thousands of Mormon immigrants, Chimney Rock represented the psychological half-way point of their journey. They'd crossed the great American desert and would now continue their trek through the mountains.

It's on the south side of the North Platte River, about 3 1/2 miles from where the pioneers camped the night of May 25, 1847.

That night they were in good spirits. They'd reached a significant landmark on their journey west.
