The pioneers made good progress this May 24, in 1847 ending up here, just across the river from the formation called Courthouse Rock.
They stopped and formed their wagons into a defensive circle after seeing a party of 35 indians galloping their horses on the opposite side of the river. Stand upThe indians raised a white flag of peace, the pioneers responded with one of their own. The indians crossed the river and the pioneers cautiously welcomed them into their camp.
Howard Egan:
"THEY WERE ALL WELL DRESSED AND BEHAVED THEMSELVES BETTER THAN ANY INDIANS I HAVE EVER SEEN BEFORE."
The pioneers even put up a tent for the chief and his squaw to sleep in.
