The waters of Lake McConoughy cover the trail made by the pioneers on this May 19, 1847. And perhaps, its appropriate, since it rained virtually the entire day.
Wilford Woodruff:
"WE HAD THE MOST WATER FALL DURING THE DAY AND EVENING THAT WE HAVE MET WITH ON THE WHOLE JOURNEY."
Now, beneath the lake are the high, sandy bluffs that required double hitching of teams to cross. The wheels of their wagons rolled in sand nearly to the hub. While scouting the route ahead during the morning, Heber C. Kimball encountered a pack of wolves. They scared him to death when they wouldn't flee. So, he did. Because of his experience, they named the creek near where it happened, Wolf Creek.
