Day 44: Tuesday, May 18, 1847 (May 18, 1997)

For more than two weeks now, the pioneers heading west had found plenty of wild game for food. For some killing had become sport and that didn't set well with Brigham Young this May 18th.

Brigham Young:

"GOD HAS GIVEN US A COMMANDMENT THAT WE SHOULD NOT WASTE MEAT, NOR TAKE LIFE UNLESS IT IS NEEDFUL."

His strong rebuke had an immediate effect.

Wilford Woodruff:

"I DID NOT HEAR A GUN FIRED ON THE ROAD DURING THE DAY."

The road they blazed now is buried beneath the waters of Lake McConaughy, this 20-mile long reservoir formed by Kingsley Dam. Also under water, Rattlesnake Creek, so named by Brigham because his horse nearly stepped on a large rattlesnake on the bank of the stream.
