More sand hills for the pioneers to cross this May 15th in 1847. They'd hoped to go farther than the seven miles they traveled, but buffalo had depleted the grass ahead, so they decided to camp near here for weekend.
Erastus Snow:
"THE FEED IS GOOD, BUT WOOD IS VERY SCARCE AND THE BUFFALO CHIPS ARE NOT A VERY GOOD SUBSTITUTE FOR WOOD WHEN THEY ARE WET."
They found fresh footprints in the sand near the river--an indication that Indians were close by.
Orson Pratt:
"OUR WAGONS ARE GENERALLY ORGANIZED IN THE CIRCUMFRANCE OF A CIRCLE... IN THE INTERIOR OF WHICH OUR HORSES ARE WELL SECURED DURING THE NIGHT."
The pioneers couldn't afford to lose any more horses.
