Day 40: Friday, May 14, 1847 (May 14, 1997)

The pioneers faced a bit of a barrier this May 14, in 1847 as they continued westward along the North Fork of the Platte.

Erastus Snow:

"WE FOUND A VERY GOOD BUT CIRCUITOUS ROUTE THROUGH THE SAND HILLS AND MADE OUR WAY TO THE BOTTOM AGAIN...."

This area hasn't changed much in 150-years and etched in these sand hills, the actual trail of the pioneers. It's one of the few places where you can still see the ruts made by their wagons. Wilford Woodruff went out in the hills to hunt.

Wilford Woodruff:

" I FINALLY GOT LOST AMONG THE BLUFFS...BUT FOUND MY WAY OUT AGAIN."

They traveled nearly 9 miles this day, but as the crow flies, they only progressed about five miles.
