Though it was a Sunday in 1847, the pioneers moved three and a half miles along the trail this May 9th, to find better feed for their livestock.
Here, near what is today Brady, Nebraska, they spent the rest of the Sabbath. Like others, William Clayton walked nearly a mile to the Platte to wash his socks, towel and handkerchief.
William Clayton:
"I THEN STRIPPED MY CLOTHING OFF AND WASHED FROM HEAD TO FOOT, WHICH HAS MADE ME FEEL MUCH MORE COMFORTABLE FOR I WAS COVERED WITH DUST."
