The pioneer trail this May 4th in 1847 went virtually where Interstate 80 goes today thru central Nebraska. Across the Platte River they saw a group of traders. One came across to greet the pioneers. He also encouraged them to cross over and follow the more developed Oregon Trail on the south side of the Platte.
The pioneers held a council. The south side might make their journey easier, but they were pioneering a trail for others to follow.
Wildford Woodruff:
"..LET THE RIVER SEPARATE MORMONS FROM OTHER EMIGRANTS SO THERE WILL BE NO QUARREL OVER WOOD, GRASS AND WATER."
They would continue on the north side of the Platte.
