For days the pioneers of 1847 had seen signs of Buffalo. On May 1st, they finally found them:
Heber C. Kimball:
"THIS SEEMED TO CHEER THE BRETHREN VERY MUCH AS MANY LONGED TO GIVE THEM A CHASE."
As the wagons plodded along, a hunting party of eleven went after the buffalo.
Thomas Bullock:
"NOW WAS A TIME OF GREAT EXCITEMENT...TO SEE THE CHASE AND EVERY MAN WAS INTENSELY ANXIOUS FOR THE SUCCESS OF OUR RAW HUNTERS, THIS BEING THEIR FIRST CHASE."
The hunters returned with one bull, three cows and six calves. Today a city covers part of the area where the pioneers hunted and here in Centennial Park in Kearney, Nebraska is an historical marker that tells the pioneer tale.
