With South Pass behind them, the pioneers continued over terrain that hasn't changed much since June 28, 1847. Just beyond the Little Sandy, they came face to face with a legend. They decided to end their day's journey early so they could spend the evening with Jim Bridger.
Norton Jacob:
"HE WAS VERY OBLIGING AND GAVE US ALL THE INFORMATION IN HIS POWER CONCERNING THE COUNTRY."
Several in camp interviewed Bridger at length about their prospective home. Not everyone believed him.
Howard Egan:
"...FROM HIS APPEARANCE AND CONVERSATION, I SHOULD NOT TAKE HIM TO BE A MAN OF TRUTH."
Still, during a few hours of conversation they got vital information about the Great Basin.
