Day 74: Thursday, June 17, 1847 (June 17, 1997)

Finally, after several days of hard work, the pioneers this June 17, 1847 finished ferrying their wagons across the North Platte River. The last item across, this canon, now on display in a Salt Lake City museum.

Heber C. Kimball:

"WE FELT THANKFUL AND GLAD WHEN WE SAW ALL THE WAGONS AND EFFECTS SAFE ON THE NORTH SHORE."

The wagons were strung out along the north shore for more than a half mile, so Brigham Young ordered them to once again come together and camp in a circle.

Meantime, two companies of Missouri emigrants arrived on the south shore. They agreed to pay the Mormons to ferry their wagons across, at a dollar-fifty per wagon. The Mormon ferrymen immediately went to work.
