After traveling 12 miles, this June 12, 1847, the pioneers arrived here. Today, it's Casper, Wyoming. Then, it was a strategic spot to cross the North Platte River.
That advance party sent three days earlier got here in time to ferry several companies of emigrants from Missouri across the river. The Missourians paid the Mormons a dollar-fifty per wagon, and they paid in flour at the rate of two-dollars and 50-cents a pound.
Heber C. Kimball:
"WE REGARD THIS CIRCUMSTANCE AS PROVIDENTIAL INASMUCH AS SOME OF OUR CAMP WERE ALREADY DESTITUTE OF BREADSTUFFS."
The ferrying operation brought in a total of 34-dollars worth of much needed food and supplies.
