Day 60: Thursday, June 3, 1847 (June 3, 1997)

Since leaving Winter Quarters, the pioneers of 1847 had consciously avoided the well-established Oregon Trail on the South side of the Platte Rivers. Instead, they blazed a new road to the north. But, now, because of natural barriers ahead, they would have to cross the North Platte this June 3rd and continue their journey along the Oregon Trail.

They got most of the wagons across, but stormy weather delayed completing the task. Meantime, the pioneers in camp attended to chores.

Wilford Woodruff:

"BROTHER BURNHAM DONE MY WASHING TODAY, THE FIRST TIME I HAVE WASHED MY CLOTHING SINCE I LEFT WINTER QUARTERS."

Tomorrow, they would leave Fort Laramie and head west.
