Day 111: Saturday, July 24, 1847 (July 24, 1997)

On this July 24th, 1847, Brigham Young, in Wilford Woodruff's carriage came down Emigration Canyon and into the Salt Lake Valley.

Wilford Woodruff:

"PRESIDENT YOUNG EXPRESSED HIS FULL SATISFACTION IN THE APPEARANCE OF THE VALLEY AS A RESTING PLACE FOR THE SAINTS AND WAS AMPLY REPAYED FOR HIS JOURNEY."

They came down off the bench to the encampment at today's City and County Building.

Norton Jacob:

"BROTHER BRIGHAM'S CAMP...SOON ARRIVED IN CAMP GREATLY TO THE JOY OF US ALL."

By now, five acres had been plowed, City Creek dammed and the first crops irrigated. No time wasted as the pioneers immediately went to work exploring and building their great basin kingdom.
