Day 98: Sunday, July 11, 1847 (July 11, 1997)

It being Sunday, the pioneers remained camped this July 11, 1847 on Sulphur Creek, near a spring of fresh water. Several ventured nearby and discovered a Sulphur Spring. A mile away, another group found a spring of tar or oil.

William Clayton:

"IT IS SOMEWHAT SINGULAR TO FIND SUCH A GREAT CONTRAST OF SUBSTANCES WITHIN SO SHORT A DISTANCE."

Today, this fresh water spring that was used by the pioneers still supplies culinary water for the Wagstaff family. Their farm encompasses the campsite. And where the wagons crossed the creek 150-years ago, you can still find reminders of the journey west. Ruts and somtimes rocks covered with rust from the iron rims of the wagon wheels.
