Day 97: Saturday, July 10, 1847 (July 10, 1997)

They'd crossed the Continental Divide at South Pass two weeks earlier, but on this July 10, 1847, the pioneers reached another divide and the highest point on their journey west. Just past Aspen Mountain they entered the Great Basin, where no rivers drain to the ocean. The road this day was steep and trecherous, but all made it safely to their camp at sulphur Creek.

Here they had a visitor. Miles Goodyear came into camp with glowing reports of his home on the lower Weber River where Ogden is today.

Wilford Woodruff:

"HE HAS...A GARDEN AND VEGETATION OF ALL KINDS, HE SAYS (IS) DOING WELL."

They listened with interest, knowing a nearby valley would soon be their new home.
