As the pioneers moved west this April 30th, in 1847, the day turned dark and gloomy. A cold north wind blew, causing the travelvers to don overcoats and buffalo robes.
After traveling about 16 miles over relatively level prairie, they camped near a bluff a mile from the Platte. There was very little wood.
"SNOW: HERE FOR THE FIRST TIME WE RESORTED TO BUFFALO MANURE FOR FUEL AND FOUND IT BETTER THAN WE HAD EXPECTED."
They also dug a well and found ample water for their livestock. As the evening got progressively colder, and because they had no fuel for large fires, Brigham Young let the pioneers dance to keep warm.
