Day 24: Wednesday, April 28, 1847 (April 28, 1997)

Another horse tragedy for the pioneers camped beside a creek this April 28th. The night before a gun accidentally discharged and the bullet hit a horse owned by Lewis Barney. They tried to save it, but this morning Luke Johnson had to destroy the animal.

In the early afternoon, the pioneers reached Wood Creek near the Platte and continued along its banks for another four miles.

Could they have imagined this when they passed by here in 1847? Grand Island is one of Nebraska's largest towns.

And here, not far from the center of town, a barely noticeable remnant of the trail the pioneers followed.
