Day 20: Saturday, April 24, 1847 (April 24, 1997)

The pioneers had planned to use two rafts to cross the Loop River on this April 24th in 1847. But they abandoned the partially built rafts after discovering a ford where their wagons wheels would compact the quicksand in the river.

By doubling teams, they commenced taking loaded wagons across--a task that took most of the day.

HOWARD EGAN:

"...ALL HANDS WERE TIRED WORKING CROSSING OVER THE RIVER. I THANK THE LORD THE MORROW IS A DAY OF REST."

But they wouldn't rest this Saturday until moving several more miles along the south bank of the Loup. This marker near the town of Fullerton memorializes their campsite in this vacinity.
