Day 2: Tuesday, April 6, 1847 (April 5, 1997)

Though the first wagons started west the day before, most of the people returned this day to Winter Quarters.

April 6, 1847 was the 17th anniversary of the founding of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and a day to meet in General Conference.

Little remains today of Winter Quarters, but this model shows us what it was like.

"NOW THE TOWN IS CALLED FLORENCE AND THAT MILL IS ONE OF THE FEW PHYSICAL REMINDERS OF THE MORMON PRESENCE DURING THE WINTER OF 1846 AND '47."

Anxious to be on their journey, Brigham Young dismissed the general conference after the morning meeting so the pioneers could continue preparing for their trek west.
