Jan. 29, 2001--
Gun education in the
elementary schools. It's a new
proposal on Capitol Hill.
A lawmaker from Orem wants to make sure that
Utah's children grow up with a proper understanding
of gun safety and rights.
The bill calls for weapons education beginning
in kindergarten.
In the younger grades it would teach avoidance
only-- see a gun and walk away.
It would not include
handling guns for the young students.
But teenagers in high school would have the option of
learning to handle guns, under the training of a certified
instructor.
It would also teach students about the
constitutional right to bear arms.
