(Salt Lake City-AP) -- Legislation has been prepared to hamper efforts of the Goshute Indians to store nuclear waste on their reservation in Skull Valley and to reward them if the abandon the plan.
Senator Terry Spencer, a Layton lawyer with experience in environmental litigation, unveiled four bills yesterday. They all deal with the plan to store spent nuclear fuel rods under contract with Private Fuel Storage, a consortium of out-of-state utilities.
One of the bills would promise economic development and investment in educational opportunities both on and off the reservation.
Spencer also is sponsoring a bill to appropriate one-point-six (M)million-dollars for an anti-nuke campaign and attorney fees in expectation of a prolonged court battle.
