They usually leave around September 15th.
MEANING: Earlier than usual storminess.

The layers of corn husks at harvest indicates
the severity of the coming winter.
3-4 layers = mild winter
5-7 layers = average winter
8-9 layers = heavy winter
This year 10-11 layers!
MEANING: VERY snowy winter!

MEANING: Early or hard winter.

When the skins on the onions are tough or hard
it is going to be a hard, snowy winter.
This year the onion skins are hard and tough.

winter. This year the acorns are the biggest he
has seen.

The heavier the winter coat on his wolf-Malamute
dog, the worse the winter. This year his dog has
a heavy coat.

The tree rings on a 400+ year old tree in the
Uintas shows a pattern of 3 wet years followed
by 7 dry years. The last two years have been wet.
MEANING: A snowy winter!

When the squirrels start early and store many
nuts, it will be a hard winter. This year the
squirrels have been storing FRANTICALLY.
MEANING: A long, hard winter.

The height of the ant hills in the fields indicates
the severity of the upcoming winter. A level hill
means a mild winter. A high hill means a wet winter.
This year the ant hills are very high.

If the caterpillars are extra wooly it means a stormy
winter. This year the caterpillars are not very
wooly.
