Over the years we pay thousands of dollars in insurance costs-- for our cars, our homes and our health.
But there's another type of insurance you might want to check into.
News Specialist Jed Boal reports from the Salt Lake International Airport.
It's not flight insurance, but, you may want it on your next trip-- especially if it's a rainy day like today.
Imagine this-- you take off for your dream vacation after months of planning. When you get there it rains the entire time.
Listen to this--you can now get rain insurance.
"The park we were going to go in to went under sixteen feet, sixteen feet of water!"
Most seasosoned travelers can tell a terrible tale or two about a rainstorm that ruined a trip.
For Brian Edwards it was, "Lake Chelan thunderstorm. Lightning, rain, in Washington, for about 20 hours."
The Edwards family doesn't like the rain on vacation. But, it's no big deal. After all they're from Seattle.
But, if you're determined to beat the weather, you can buy rain insurance at www.weatherins.com.
The company will insure your trip against rain.
For example, a 10-day trip to the Grand Canyon that costs $2,000, can be insured for a premium of $40.
Ten summer days in Seattle for $60.
You can type in your plans to get a quote.
The travellers we talked to were skeptical.
Len Gomes said, "That'd be good as long as the premium wasn't too much." Jed:
"So you think that's something that you'd look into?" Len: "Probably not...we
try to stay away from the rain."
Brian Edwards says, "I'd say it'd be hard to sell. Who'd buy it?"
Travel agents we spoke with were suprised, but think customers might like
it for an expensive dream vacation or cruise.
As Kim Edwards puts it, "I guess it would be a good idea if you were
travelling to Cancun and you got hit by a hurricane or something like that."
The company says it's had more than 100 customers in the past two months.
Mainly golfers and honeymooners, but no one's collected on a wash-out.
I also asked if they'd insure my days off. They said sure, if I want to
pay the premium. You name the day and they'll insure it.
