Shopping Safely on the Internet

Nearly a quarter of Holiday shoppers will buy things online this year. Online shopping can be quite convenient and time-saving, and can be less risky if you are educated about how to shop safely on the internet.

The Chairman of the American Bar Association, Tom Vartanian, says, "The only way that you can protect yourself is through educating yourself about how to protect yourself. Educating yourself about who you are dealing with, what are the good signs to look for, what are the bad signs to look for, and again developing that instinct so that you protect yourself."

The American Bar Association launched a web site last month that offers some tips to help consumers make smart choices.

  • Always check the address, phone numbers and references of a website.

  • Keep records of all transactions.

  • Never send cash or money orders on-line.
