New Study: Internet & Social Isolation

Oct. 25, 2000

Does too much time on the Internet make you anti-social? Not according to a new UCLA study.

Seventy-five percent of Internet users polled say they never feel ignored by another household member spending time online. In fact, most say that e-mail, Web sites and chat rooms have a "modestly positive impact" on their abilities to make new friends and communicate more with family.

Lead researcher Jeffrey Cole says the survey leaves many questions unanswered. He hopes to continue the study over the next ten to 20 years in an effort to address more issues relating to the technology.

The study tracked the online habits of two-thousand-96 respondents and included Internet users as well as nonusers.

Researchers say the study has a margin of error of two percentage points.
