Violent Toys

A consumer group today released its annual list of most violent toys, in hopes holiday shoppers will steer clear of what they call the "Dirty Dozen."

The executive director of The Lion and Lamb Project says children are constantly targeted by advertisements for violent products.

Daphne White says kids who "still believe in Santa Claus, who believe in tooth fairies and monsters under the bed" don't understand that violent play can hurt other kids. White complains that the toy industry won't accept responsibility for the effect such toys can have.

The list includes an X-Men action figure that eggs children on to violence with the recorded message, "Hit my head again, if you dare."

It also includes action figures of characters from wrestling and adult-rated video games.

White also said, "Just as Joe Camel ads were intended to sell children on the concept that smoking was cool, toys are now being sold on the concept that violence is cool, whether that violence is connected to movies, to video games, or to television programs."

The Lion & Lamb Project also put out a top 20 list of toys it recommends.
