Violent Toys

Nov. 22, 1999

A consumer group says children's toys are more violent than ever this year. Today they appealed to parents to be selective in their holiday shopping.

Ever since action figures on kids tv shows became cash cows toy makers have been steadily upping the ante.

Daphne White, Director, Lion & Lamb Project: "Toy manufacturers and video game manufacturers are bringing out toys that push the envelope on violence more than ever before."

In releasing its annual dirty dozen list, the Lion and Lamb Project rates this year's crop of holiday toys the most violent ever.

Droid Blaster is one of the dirty dozen. So is the impaled mummy.

Ms. White: "It says on it, 'Impale the mummy. Watch as his intestines fall out of his chest.'"

And Duke Nukem, armed with multiple guns, knives and ropes.

Critics are convinced there's a link between fantasy and tragedy. Toys like Maze Mania and Robotix Remote Speeder are said to teach creativity.

Toy retailer Zany Brainy is offering a new non-violent toy at no cost to any kid or parent who trades in a violent one.

Tom Vellios, President, ZanyBrainy: "We think this will help foster awareness on the fact that there are great products out there."

The trade can be made at a Zany Brainy store or through the company's new web site.
