Storm Spawns Tornado

(Salt Lake City-AP) -- A line of thunderstorms moved through the Salt Lake area this evening, spawning a tornado that damaged roofs on two stores and causing street flooding.

No injuries were reported.

Brian McInerney of the National Weather Service hydrologist said the tornado was reported at 6:20 p.m. in the Holladay area.

The storm was apparently on the ground for just a short period of time, but it tore down power lines and sucked up dirt and debris from a construction site, strewing it around the neighborhood.

A Goodyear Auto Tire Center had part of its roof damaged, and the nearby Albertson's grocery store also was damaged.

McInerney said at least eight cars had windows broken either from the wind or from debris. He said a house roof also was damaged but it was unknown whether it was from the tornado or other winds.

Albertson's employee Jamie Hessling said the tornado tore off a part of the roof that was a few square yards, bent an awning and left about three inches of water in the store's back room. The store remained open.

McInerney said one inch of rain fell in 20 minutes at Sugarhouse and an automated rain gauge on the east side of town measured one-point-24 inch in an hour.

Hail one and a quarter inch in diameter fell was reported in West Kearns.

Street flooding was reported on the east bench and in Magna. Water was running one-to-one-half feet deep in the Olympus Cove and east bench areas and some manhole covers blew off from the force of water in the storm system.
