Mayor's Update: Aug. 26
(August 26, 1999) Updated assessment of damage from the Salt Lake tornado:
- Overall losses-- est. $170-million
- Damaged homes reported-- 387 (5 destroyed, 30 with major structural damage)
- Debris removal in impacted neighborhoods is essentially complete.
- Trees impacted-- 806 (531 destroyed, 275 damaged).
- Memory Grove trees-- 412 destroyed, 66 damaged.
- The cleanup of Memory Grove remains a large task. The devastation there calls for the development of a rebuilding plan. It is an opportunity to remedy some of the former problems there. The City will lead a public process to make the park better than it was before the tornado.
