Teen Tobacco Quit Line

More Info

Oct. 4, 2000-- Teen smokers can now learn The Truth about Tobacco with one telephone call.

Today the state of Utah kicked off the first ever Teen Quit Line aimed at helping kids kick the habit. News Specialist Jill Atwood has more.

The state of Utah refuses to butt out when it comes to teens smoking. So now kids can call and talk to a live person with information and referrals to help them take that not so easy next step.

They're young and healthy and the goal is to keep them that way by taking cigarettes out of the equation.

Dr. Tamara Lewis/Utah Master Settlement Advisory Board: "MOST OF YOU HAVE PROBABLY TRIED BEFORE AND FAILED. NOW THE REASON IS YOU'RE ADDICTED TO A SUBSTANCE THAT'S MORE ADDICTIVE THAN HEROIN."

Utah's Teen Quit Line can help students through the rough patches, coaching them, couseling them.

"HI, MY NAME IS NINA AND I'M READY TO QUIT SMOKING."

Starting them down the path of smoke-free lives.

Susan Traff/Counselor, Teen Quit Line: "THEY TEND TO WANT TO BE ABLE TO TRUST WHO THEY'RE TALKING TO..THEY WANT MORE OF A RELATIONSHIP WITH THE COUSELOR OR THE SPECIALIST BEFORE THEY DIVULGE THIS THING THAT THEY'RE DOING THAT THEY KNOW IS NOT RIGHT."

The program works confidentially and there's no pressure to quit. The information and help is simply made available, but it's up to them to follow through.

Nina Santos/Teen Smoker: "I DON'T WANT TO DIE AT A YOUNG AGE AND THERE ARE SO MANY DISEASES FROM IT AND I JUST DON'T WANT TO...I JUST WANT TO LIVE LONGER."

Lacey Nielsen/Teen Smoker: "I'M PRETTY MUCH GOING INTO IT WITH AN OPEN MIND. I HOPE THEY CAN HELP ME. I DON'T WANT TO SMOKE ANYMORE."

The phone number to call is 1-888-567-TRUTH.

Utah is the first state in the country to kick off a program like this, but of course they're hoping it catches on.

Also, it's one of Utah's first tangible benefits of the Tobacco Master Settlement Agreement.
