Facts About West Nile Virus

West Nile Virus was first isolated in Uganda in 1937. Since then, it has been reported in Africa, Europe, the Middle East, west and central Asia, Oceania, and most recently North America.

The first cases of West Nile Virus in the U.S. were reported in August 1999. Last year, 62 cases of severe disease and 7 deaths occurred in the New York area.

According to the Centers For Disease Control, most cases of West Nile Virus are mild. Only 3% to 15% of the cases result in death.

Symptoms can include:

  • fever
  • headache
  • body aches
  • skin rash
  • swollen lymph glands

    More severe infection, which is rare, may include:

  • headache
  • high fever
  • neck stiffness
  • stupor
  • disorientation
  • coma
  • muscle weakness
  • death (rare)

West Nile virus is transmitted by infectious mosquitoes. There is no documented evidence of person-to-person, animal-to-animal, or animal-to-person transmission.
