Testosterone Therapy

Jan. 12, 2001-- Americans are living longer and longer. But for many, that's not enough.

They not only want to live longer, they want to age without losing their youthful vitality.

As Dr. Todd Husty shows us, many of them are turning to their pharmacist to find the fountain of youth.

Harris Miller/uses testosterone: "I feel fantastic. I haven't felt this good in years."

Vicky McVay/uses testosterone: "I know my body after being in it now 52 years, ok...that what we're doing works."

WHAT HARRIS MILLER AND VICKY MCVAY ARE DOING IS ADDING TESTOSTERONE TO THEIR LIVES. TESTOSTERONE IS WHAT MAKES MEN MANLY.

WOMEN ALSO NEED IT TO MAINTAIN A VIBRANT LIFE. BUT AS WE GET OLDER, OUR TESTOSTERONE LEVELS BEGIN TO FALL, WHICH COULD AFFECT OUR HEALTH.

Harris's wife: "He was depressed and he just didn't have stamina, to want to go out, to want to do anything."

McVay: "I had a lot of things. I felt like not functioning right or all of a sudden my knee joint hurt and I was noticing that my muscle tone was not as good as it used to be."

AND EACH FELT THEY WERE LOSING SOME OF THEIR SEX DRIVE.

VICKY'S DOCTOR SAID SHE WAS GOING THROUGH MENOPAUSE, AND PUT HER ON ESTROGEN AND PROGESTERONE THERAPY.

WHEN THAT DIDN'T HELP, HER DOCTOR CHECKED HER TESTOSTERONE LEVELS AND FOUND THAT THEY WERE LOW, SO SHE PRESCRIBED A TESTOSTERONE CREAM.

McVay: "It's helped to relieve a lot of problems, joint problems, my sexual activity, my interest in sex has appreciated."

Dr. Todd Husty, reporting: "There are those who question the effectiveness and safety of using testosterone cream before it's studied more. But Vicky's and Harris' doctors say the risk is low, and well worth it."

Dr. Billie Jean Pace/ob-gyn: "Do you wait for the studies to confirm everything that you do or do you try to help that person right now? Knowing that you may not have all the data but you have enough data to risk benefitting the patient."

Dr. Richard Murray/The Murray Institute: "We're finding out that testosterone has the same effect on the brain, on memory, on mood like estrogen does."

AND THAT'S WHAT DOCTOR MURRAY SAYS HE DID FOR HARRIS, AFTER CHECKING HIS TESTOSTERONE LEVELS.

Harris Miller/uses testosterone: "When I came back he said, you're off the chart. I said that's great and he said no, the wrong way. So he recommended that I take this cream. It's improved everything, I have much more energy. I've got a smile on my face and it's really been fantastic. I feel like I'm about 23 years old now and my wife is complaining a little bit."

SO IF YOU BELIEVE HARRIS AND VICKY, THE FOUNTAIN OF YOUTH MAY NOT BE FILLED WITH WATER, BUT WITH HORMONE CREAMS CONTAINING TESTOSTERONE.

Dr. Richard Murray/The Murray Institute: "I feel strongly that as we replace hormones, you can physiologically make someone much much younger."

A month's supply of testosterone costs about $125. And don't bother filling out any insurance forms. This therapy is usually not covered.
