Ricks College: Facts & History
- College president: Dr. David A Bednar.
- Enrollment Cap: 8,600.
- Largest privately-owned two-year college in America.
- Of the original
academies established by the L.D.S. Church, only Ricks College and Brigham Young University remain
part of the Church Educational System.
- Created November 12, 1888, as the Bannock Stake Academy. Renamed Fremont Stake Academy in 1898, then Ricks Academy in 1903.
- Named in honor of Thomas E. Ricks, the Bannock Stake president at the time it was
founded, and the chairman of the school's first Board of Education.
- The first high school program was introduced in 1898, a year of college curriculum was added 15-20 years later.
- In 1917, the school was granted state certification, and the Academy became Ricks Normal College, then Ricks College in 1923.
- Accreditation is through the Northwest Association of Schools and Colleges.
