Ricks College: Facts & History

  • College president: Dr. David A Bednar.

  • Enrollment Cap: 8,600.

  • Largest privately-owned two-year college in America.

  • Of the original academies established by the L.D.S. Church, only Ricks College and Brigham Young University remain part of the Church Educational System.

  • Created November 12, 1888, as the Bannock Stake Academy. Renamed Fremont Stake Academy in 1898, then Ricks Academy in 1903.

  • Named in honor of Thomas E. Ricks, the Bannock Stake president at the time it was founded, and the chairman of the school's first Board of Education.

  • The first high school program was introduced in 1898, a year of college curriculum was added 15-20 years later.

  • In 1917, the school was granted state certification, and the Academy became Ricks Normal College, then Ricks College in 1923.

  • Accreditation is through the Northwest Association of Schools and Colleges.
