Four Missionaries Die In Car Crash

Jan. 29, 2000

The First Presidency of the LDS Church today issued a statement of condolence about the death of four missionaries in a car accident in Iowa yesterday.

It reads in part:

"We express our profound sorrow and deepest sympathy on the tragic death of four of our young missionaries. To the families, the loss is inexpressible. To the Church that they so valiantly served, the loss is incalcuable."

They also expressed sympathy to the family of the man who died in the other vehicle.

The missionaries who died are:

  • Jaysen Christiansen, of Harrisville
  • Jared Pulham, of Alpine
  • Bradley Savage, of Lehi
  • Daniel Roundy, of Kaysville

The missionaries were killed yesterday afternoon when their car slammed head-on into a truck in Southern Iowa.

The Iowa State Patrol says they were westbound on U.S. Highway 34 near Osceola, when the driver tried to pass and skidded on the shoulder. Their car crossed into eastbound lanes and crashed into a pick-up truck. Both vehicles burst into flames.

Those in the LDS Church's missionary department say the loss of a single missionary is tragic, four is incomprehensible. A spokesman says there is no recollection of that many dying at one time.

Religion Specialist Carole Mikita spent today with the young men's families and bishops and has their story.

To put it in their words, they are living by faith now and leaning on extended family, friends and church leaders to help them through this very difficult time. But they all wanted, in some way, to tell everyone about their sons.

Their mission president described them as 'four perfect sons'-- Elders Roundy, Christiansen, Pulham and Savage.

The Roundys say Daniel was very sure of himself and his decisions, always energetic and enthusiastic, and thrilled to go on a mission in the United States.

Steve Roundy/Father of Elder Daniel Roundy: "Iowa is a flat place, out in the middle of corn fields and farm country. And he thought that was the neatest place in the world to go. He was just extremely excited. He couldn't have been more pleased."

Neka Roundy/Mother of Elder Daniel Roundy: "When we talked to him at Christmas, he said, 'Oh, Mom, this is the place I'm supposed to be. I know I'm supposed to be here. I love these people.'"

A sweet, quiet young man with a great sense of humor is how Jaysen Christiansen's bishop describes him. He was most anxious to serve a mission, but his parents were concerned because of the missionary who was stabbed and killed in Russia.

Bishop Garth Martin/Elder Jaysen Christiansen's bishop: "Jaysen persuaded his parents, things will be okay, Mom. But then, just before he left, he said to his father, 'What if I do die?' The father said, 'Just place your faith in the Lord and things will be alright.'"

Cheerful, soft- spoken, friendly, loved to talk to strangers, and quite an organizer. Jared Pulham was a district leader on his mission. His parents say he loved the farmers in Iowa.

Cherie and Brian Pulham/Parents of Elder Jared Pulham: "When he first got there, he was saving a lot of homes from the floods. They would get up in the morning and put their work clothes on and go out and sandbag and move stuff and help the people there."

Brad Savage was a 3A championship diver, three years in a row. He loved all living things. even on his mission he rescued animals, including an orphaned bunny.

Keri Savage/Mother of Elder Brad Savage: "If he heard a dog bark a mile away, he knew if it was chained up or not. He always got bit. He had his bike and scriptures stolen. He was hit by a car, but he got a contact out of it. He told me when he called he had never been happier in his whole life."

The families say their sons are young men of faith and that will strengthen them as well. At this time of mourning and grief, they are thinking of one another.

Keri Savage: "And we want to offer our condolences to all the other families because we know exactly how they feel."

That was the sweetest thing that happened today, each expressing sympathy for the others. As the LDS Church's First Presidency said, "These faithful young men were deeply loved and will be dearly missed."

Funeral arrangements have not been made yet.
